How to Pull Off a Short Hair Style

No one rocks the short hair style better than Keira Knightly. It’s short, piecey, and very hip. “Pirate” her look and snag your very own Jack Sparrow this Valentine’s Day!

1. Because short hair styles need lots of body, the best way to bulk up strands is by adding protein. Start by washing with a protein-rich shampoo, such as Lanza Hair Repair Formula Protein plus Shampoo. If your hair is dry or damaged, follow up with a conditioner like Graham Webb Classic Silk Repair Protein Conditioner. For normal to oily hair, skip the conditioner.

2. Towel dry hair. While it’s still damp, vigorously massage in Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam. Spray at the roots to give lift. Blowdry hair upside down with a ceramic model (to avoid damage) while tousling.

3. When hair is almost dry, flip hair back up, and mist with a thermal spray like Chi 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray. It guards against heat damage and adds texture. Blowdry strands and style them forward. Because you’ll be using two heated appliances, it is extremely important to use a high-quality dryer.

4. Holding hair at the roots, straighten only the ends to prevent volume-loss. Choose a ceramic iron to enhance shine and prevent damage.

5. Finish with a little bit of shine pomade. Use a natural product, such as Alterna Hemp Seed Sheer Pomade, so your short style won’t be weighed down. Gently ruffle hair back and forth with fingers and palms, starting in the back and moving forward. Smooth and separate pieces with fingers.
